Re: Your Editorial of March 1, 2006

Dear Sir:

I write in response to your editorial of March 1, 2006. In that editorial, you question whether the Democratic Party in Union County now has slipped into oblivion.

Undoubtedly, I was disappointed somewhat because the Democratic Party did not have candidates file to run for the county commission.  However, I understand the reluctance to file of those who might have filed in view of the cost involved in running a viable campaign and in view of the willingness of many to vote a straight party ticket despite the qualifications of the candidates of their ticket.  We Democrats are not wealthy people and do not think anyone would say that the candidates we offered the last time around, Mike Cognac, Frank Deese and Max Melton were not eminently qualified to serve our county that what was elected.

But, we have not slipped into oblivion and never will.  The mayor of Marshville is a Democrat.  The mayor of Monroe is a Democrat.  The mayor of Marvin is a Democrat. Over 30,000 registered voters in this county are registered Democrats.  And, we have an active and dedicated party organization.

We in this country as a people are a progressive, tolerant people who value knowledge and inclusiveness, both culturally and economically.  Our history is that of a people who continually are seeking these values but who face occasional set backs.  The Democratic party is the party of progressiveness and tolerance.  Eventually, the people of this country, who of all people should reject the agenda of the other party, will remember and recognize this and again or for the first time join us.

                                                                        Sincerely,

Harry B. Crow Jr. Signature

Harry B. Crow, Jr.,

Chairman, Union County Democratic Party
